25 years already. 25 years that Therion (a Swedish symphonic metal band) is touring all around the world and guess who set Bogotá’s Royal Theatre on fire the 7th of June 2012? Guess who’s been there?
I met Snowy Shaw, one of the singers -the tall blond Viking, now dark-haired to fit the South American style- 2 or 3 years ago in France and I wasn’t sure I’ll be able to meet him again, Therion being known to change line-up quite often.
So I kept in touch with him since then and, when I decided to move to Bogotá, I wasn’t aware at the time Therion was about to go touring South America. One morning, as I tried in vain to open my eyes (I guess they were still sleepy after a crazy night of Salsa dancing until 4am… could be the reason?!) I came across an article on a website saying they will be performing a few blocks away from where I was living (here’s the website for the metal heads and the curious ones, all in Spanish though: El Santuario del Rock).
That day, I spend a very nice time with the band members, talking about music, travels and French bulldogs, singing Piaf, mixing English, Spanish and Swedish while eating donuts with arequipe (or dulce de leche… an awfully delicious sweet paste that makes you gaining weight just by looking at it, yeah sorry for that good Dr Dukan and his so-called revolutionary diet, but man, you’re no match for such an opponent!).
As usual, the show was perfectly mastered, whipping the colombian audience into a frenzy. Let me tell you, Colombians know how to greet their favourite bands here. Are we, Europeans, a little bit shy or bumptious?
Here are some souvenirs of that lovely time,
